This, to me, is a delightful irony. Daughters is a song about a woman so screwed up by her relationship with her father (or parents) that she cannot commit to a relationship with the protagonist of the song (the singing voice).
Of course, it also fits perfectly in with my belief that human beings, no matter how well raised and treated, will be completely and utterly screwed up. We are beings that are most often made for pain. All of our best art comes from pain. All of our most memorable moments come from pain. It only makes sense that we will be screwed up. Pain is the essence of who most of us are. And those who have felt no pain are quite frankly boring (and quite often bored).
